It is a mega weekend for football lovebirds and lovers local restaurants are expected to busy with Sunday Big Game and early celebration of Valentine Day. Business owners revealed this weekend is needed after slower than normal begin of the year.

Local hotels are looking to score mega this weekend, the Hawaii Restaurant Association Executive Director Sheryl Matsuoka added business has slowed down after the holidays.

After holiday season till now it has been very slow and numbers are coming in very low. Matsuoka added.

As for mega game whether it be take out platter or viewing parties locations like Beastside Kitchen are getting ready.

A lot of cool stuff for whoever does come said Beastside Kitchen owner Jame Kiko.

“They wear their NFL gear and they get prizes right when you walk in door. Pretty much everyone is a winner if you come on time”

What is the Lunar New Year?

The Lunar New Year known as Spring Festival in China Tet in Vietnam and Seollal in Korea is a mega festival celebrated in various Asian countries. It is celebrated by diaspora communities around the globe.

Alligator snapping turtle found in Cumbrian tarn

An invasive alligator snapping turtle has pulled from a Cumbrain tarn.

A dog walker found the exotic creature which is native to rivers and swamps in southern parts of US in Urswick Tarn, near Ulverston on Monday.

Veterinary Surgeon Dr Dominic Moule said turtle which gives a nasty bite would likely have eaten through everything it was not rescued.

Parish councillor Denise Chamberion fished it out of water with a shopping basket and took it to vet.

Ms Chamberlan who lived in Florida saw a social media post about turtle and immediately recognised the species.

While it is not illegal to own alligator snapping turtles vets do not recommend keeping them as pets due their complicated needs.

“I suspect somebody has bought it and not realised what it is it has got too mega for them to look after or they can not afford to feed it”.

Ms Chamberlain went to retreive it with the assistant of residents.

She said ” I was anxious on two levels”.

“One was actually catching it without losing a finger but also what was I going to do with it?”

She wore three pairs of builders gloves and used a shopping basket to scoop the turtle out. She transported it to a large container with water from the tarn.

” Everybody rallied round to help” she added.

Energy supplier Flogas Energy is reducing its electricity and residential gas prices. Standing charging for gas are to down by 10% however the electricity standing charge is to remain the same.

The company is reducing its variable rate for electricity by 15% and natural gas by 25%. The cuts will take effect from 25 march.

Federal Jury Convicts Former Baltimore City States Attorney

A federal jury convicted a woman of making a wrong mortgage application while she was a Baltimore City States Attorney.

Marilyn J. Mosby 44 of Baltimore was convicted of 2 counts perjury. The USAO told in February 2021 Mosby made a wrong statement in an application for a $428,400 mortgage to purchase a condo in Long Boat Key, Fla. She expressed that she get a $5000 gift from her husband for the buying of property.

Mosby faces a maximum of 30 years in federal prison for making a false mortgage application. On Nov 9 2023 the USAO added that Mosby was convicted on two counts of perjury, relating to the withdrawal of funds from city of Baltimore’s Deferred Compensation Plan claiming she suffered financial consequences during Covid 19 pandemic.

According to evidence presented a trial Mosby added this to secure a lower interest rate. Receiving the $5000 as gift, she transferred $5000 to him and he transferred the money back to her.

She faces a maximum of sentence of 5 years for each of the two counts of perjury. Her sentencing dates have not yet been scheduled.

Metra train travelers continue to report problems with Ventra app Monday

Metra riders continue to report problems using the Ventra app Monday morning. Few riders were not able to buy new tickets or open the app.

The glitches happened past week when fare changes went into effect on February.

According to Metra says “a major software upgrade was done over the weekend and it appeared to be working Sunday.”

Some travelers ran into problems Monday morning.

Metra said ” Ventra app issues are ongoing. Any pending charges should be dismissed by your bank before posting to your account. If a charge is posted no ticket is populated then contact Passenger services at 312 MY METRA 696-3872. Conductors will accommodate riders onboard.

It is not clear how much money has been lost due to glitches. Meta spokesperson added It is significant”.

The glitches come as Metra took away its remaining ticket windows in order to push more riders to use the Ventra app.

Metra issued an apology to its riders and accommodated them while system was being repaired.

The rail agency added problem was likely due to increase in app users

The 10 Ride Ticket is being replaced with a Day Pass 5 Pack, 5 day passes that can used on any 5 days with 3 months of purchase. The Day Pass 5 Pack will available only Ventra app.The 10 Ride Ticket is will no longer be available for purchase.

Meta is eliminating the $100 super saver monthly pass and returning to prices based on distance traveled. All monthly pass prices are less than pre pandemic prices.

The February Monthly Pass did not go on sale from Ventra app pr vending machine until Thursday.

Monthly Pass will cost $75 from Zone 2 to Zone 1, S110 from Zone 3 to Zone 1 and $135 from Zone 4 to Zone 1. Monthly passes covering trips do not start or end downtown will cost $75.

Guelph Black Heritage Society celebrates Black Heritage Month

More than 25 years, Canadians have celebrated Black History Month in February following introduced by Jean Augustine, the first Black woman elected to Parliament.

February 2021 has been famous as Black Heritage Month at the Guelph Black Heritage Society GBHS. It is a month to celebrate contribution Black historical figures have made society celebrating the past always been focal point of Black History Month.

Francis said ” During Black Heritage Month the GBHS showcases they many ways Black people contribute to the local community”.

Official states in a press release “This month commemorates present and past accomplishments within the Black community and sets sights on a bright future.”

The GBHS is celebrating Black Heritage Month with a concert, Heritage Hall open house booths at the Guelph Farmer Market and Black Vacation Week.

Heart and Soul Campaign

Proceeds from all GBHS Black Heritage Month events will move towards the Heritage Hall Heart and Soul Campaign. GBHS is a registered charity and tax receipts will be issued for donations more than $25.

The campaign is an effort to expand GBHS programming and resources.

Starbucks has released new designs in celebration of black history month. Starbucks is celebrating Black History Month with its a collection of cups from Artist Damon Brown.

Brown’s work is the coffee chain Artists collaboration series with celebrates the unique stories of artists from the world. Versatile artists have use their creativity to amplify even like Pride Month this year marks the first designs for the Black community.

The latest cups and tumblers will be available across Starbucks locations in the Canada and U.S.starting Jan.30. The coffee giant continues to help Black organization like African American Mayors Association and NAACP.

A Cape Cod hotel will rebrand this summer to attract parrotheads as New England’s first “Margaritavlle” resort. A Margaritaville restaurant opened at Boston Faneuil Hall previous year.

Margaritaville Resort Cape Cod will change the Caped Codder Resort and Spa in Hyannis. The Jimmy Buffett inspired hotel chain has over 40 location worldwide.

The resort features 272 rooms , outdoor pool, indoor water park, spa and Margaritaville themed restaurants Grill and LandShark Bar and 5 o Clock Somewhere Bar.

The resort will honor reservation that were made for this year. it is operating as the Cape Codder or Margaritaville at that point.

Samsung SDI added Tuesday its 4th quarter earning down 21.6% on year due to decrease demand for batteries used in energy storage system and IT products.
