On February 10 Asian American communities around the US will start Year of Dragon with community carnivals, parades, family gathering, fireworks and festivities.

In Asian countries, it is a festival that is celebrated for various days. In diaspora communities specially in cultural enclaves, Lunar New Year is visibly and joyfully celebrated.

In Chinese zodiac 2024 is Year of Dragon. Countries across Asia celebrate the new year in many ways and follow a different zodiac.

What is the Lunar New Year?

The Lunar New Year known as Spring Festival in China Tet in Vietnam and Seollal in Korea is a mega festival celebrated in various Asian countries. It is celebrated by diaspora communities around the globe.

Alligator snapping turtle found in Cumbrian tarn

An invasive alligator snapping turtle has pulled from a Cumbrain tarn.

A dog walker found the exotic creature which is native to rivers and swamps in southern parts of US in Urswick Tarn, near Ulverston on Monday.

Veterinary Surgeon Dr Dominic Moule said turtle which gives a nasty bite would likely have eaten through everything it was not rescued.

Parish councillor Denise Chamberion fished it out of water with a shopping basket and took it to vet.

Ms Chamberlan who lived in Florida saw a social media post about turtle and immediately recognised the species.

While it is not illegal to own alligator snapping turtles vets do not recommend keeping them as pets due their complicated needs.

“I suspect somebody has bought it and not realised what it is it has got too mega for them to look after or they can not afford to feed it”.

Ms Chamberlain went to retreive it with the assistant of residents.

She said ” I was anxious on two levels”.

“One was actually catching it without losing a finger but also what was I going to do with it?”

She wore three pairs of builders gloves and used a shopping basket to scoop the turtle out. She transported it to a large container with water from the tarn.

” Everybody rallied round to help” she added.

Energy supplier Flogas Energy is reducing its electricity and residential gas prices. Standing charging for gas are to down by 10% however the electricity standing charge is to remain the same.

The company is reducing its variable rate for electricity by 15% and natural gas by 25%. The cuts will take effect from 25 march.

Federal Jury Convicts Former Baltimore City States Attorney

A federal jury convicted a woman of making a wrong mortgage application while she was a Baltimore City States Attorney.

Marilyn J. Mosby 44 of Baltimore was convicted of 2 counts perjury. The USAO told in February 2021 Mosby made a wrong statement in an application for a $428,400 mortgage to purchase a condo in Long Boat Key, Fla. She expressed that she get a $5000 gift from her husband for the buying of property.

Mosby faces a maximum of 30 years in federal prison for making a false mortgage application. On Nov 9 2023 the USAO added that Mosby was convicted on two counts of perjury, relating to the withdrawal of funds from city of Baltimore’s Deferred Compensation Plan claiming she suffered financial consequences during Covid 19 pandemic.

According to evidence presented a trial Mosby added this to secure a lower interest rate. Receiving the $5000 as gift, she transferred $5000 to him and he transferred the money back to her.

She faces a maximum of sentence of 5 years for each of the two counts of perjury. Her sentencing dates have not yet been scheduled.

Northeastern won its 2nd straight women Beanpot tournament title on Tuesday in overtime thriller. The Huskies tool down Boston U 2-1 to claim third Beanpot crown of all time.

The former 1st lady won the award for best audio book storytelling and narration recording at this year pre telecast ceremony for doing the voiceover on her latest book The Light We Carry Overcoming in Uncertain Times.

The category included Sen Bernie Sanders, Meryl Steep, William Shatner and Rick Rubin books.

Obama previously won a Grammy in 2020 for audiobook for her first memoir, Becoming. She was not present to accept the award presenter Esperanza Spalding added she would accept on her behalf.

In the ongoing legal battle between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt concerning their 500 million dollar French vineyard.

The recent win has tipped the scales in favor of the Moneyball star. The 60 year veteran actor has been embroiled in legal proceeding in Luxembourg and California over Chateau Miraval, the famous vineyard. asserting his right to ownership share.

The couple first bought the estate together before their marriage with Jolie owning 40% and Pitt holding 60%. This legal battle intensified after Jolie sold her shares to Yuri Shefler the owner of Russian vodka giant stoli.

Following their marriage at the winery in 2014 Pitt gifted Joli 10% additional transforming the ownership structure into a 50 50 divide when they separated in 2016.

Pitt has contested the validity of Jolie sale of her shares arguing that deal was not legal. He insist he should retain a 60% ownership and control the property.

The focus of the disagreement centers on the extra 10% gifted to Jolie with Pitt contesting in court their agreement for extra share is unenforceable.

The Luxembourg court at least temporarily has ruled in Pitts favor returning the 10% to him until final decision is accessed.

Pitt currently maintains a 60/40 split in ownership allowing him to retain control of the property.

The legal fought is anticipated to extend for year or more keeping the ultimate resolution in suspense. Representatives of both parties have not comments on the matter.
