Story of ‘TV dating show killer’ shown in new movie

Latest Netflix movie dramatises the true story of serial killer who appeared on a TV dating show in middle of his crimes.

Woman of the Hour directed by Anna Kendrick, show the crimes of Rodney Alcala who known as the Dating Game Killer.

Alcala appeared as bachelor on the Blind Date style show in 1978, two years before he was convicted of the kill of 12 year old girl.

He was found guilty of eight murders in total he murdered many more girls and women.

Alcala died in prison in 2021.

What has Anna Kendrick said?

Anna Kendrick was starting due to produce and star in the movie but later signed up as director.

In press material for the movie the 49 year old has said she knows it will be seen as choice by some.

Woman of the Hour premiered at last year Toronto International Film Festival Kendrick and cast were unable to attend or promote the film at time due to continue Hollywood strikes.

She is famous for appearing in the Pitch Perfect movie series and comedy drama Up in the Air which earned her an Oscar  nomination plus her appearances in the Twilight films.

Age 15, Hoyt was posing for images in February 1979 in isolated mountainous region when Alcala knocked her sexually attacked her.

When she came round Hoyt was aware she had been raped but in attempt to exit she convinced Alcala she was not angry and desire to pursue a relationship with him.

The two of them returned to his car and drove on. When Alcala stopped at petrol station to use bathroom.

Hoyt fled from his car and raised the alarm.

Who was Rodney Alcala?

Rodney Alcala was a serial killer and sex offender who was found guilty of eight murder across Wyoming, California, New York between 1971 and 1979.

Alcala died of natural causes in 2021 aged 77 at hospital near the Corcoran state prison in California.

Posting as fashion photographer Alcala often targeted ladies by complimenting them and asking to take photos of them.

In 1980 Alcala was sentence to death in California for murder of 12 year old Robin Samsoe.

His sentence was later overturned by California Supreme Court and he was granted a new trial.

He get the same penalty in the second trial in 1986 but that was overturned in 2003.

In subsequent years Investigators discovered forensic evidence linking Alcala to other California murders.

At latest trial in 2010 he was found guilty of killing Samsoe as well as four other women aged between 18 and 32 in years between 1977 and 1979.

In 2016 he was charged with 1977 murder of Christine Ruth Thornton a woman who investigators had identified in one of his image.

In 1994 while in custody Alcala wrote a book title you the Jury in which he argues he was innocent.

In 2012 Alcala was extradited to New York after he was charged over two further from 1971 and 1977.

He pleaded guilty and was sentenced in New York to 25 years to life.

How is he presented in the new film?

The date between Alcala and Bradshaw is an invention. The movie imagines their trip to bar and subsequent altercation  in car park.

Woman of the Hour opens in 1977 with Alcala encourages a woman named Sarah to reveal details of her personal life as he images her in a remote moutain area of Wyoming.

Things take sinister turn when Alcala suddenly turns nasty and start to attack her setting the tone for the method he preys on multiple of women he encounters for the rest of the turn.

Film based on real life cases the film takes entertainment turn.

The films timeline jumps around as viewer follows a different strands with each focus on different woman.
