Sam Nordquist: Who Was He?
Sam was more than a headline or a statistic to those who knew him. He supported people with impairments at Riesco group homes in Little Canada, Minnesota, as a kind caretaker.
He “would take the shirt off his back” to assist people, according to his family. However, when he left Minnesota in September 2024 to meet an internet girlfriend in New York, his generosity was met with brutality.
His family last communicated with him on January 1, 2025. When calls and messages went unanswered, worry turned to fear.
By February 9, he was officially reported missing, only for his body to be found days later, sending shockwaves through both his community and the nation.

Minnesota opposes this unimaginable tragedy alongside our LGBTQ+ neighbors. In addition, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has demanded that Nordquist’s gender identity be investigated immediately.
GLAAD claims that the rates of violence against transgender people are startlingly high, especially for transgender men and women of color.
