Rail passengers could travel between Edinburgh and London in only 4 hours by the end of this year.It will reduce current average travelling by 30 minutes. The most awaited step will speed the change from airplane to train making travel by train as rapid as flights between the capitals.
The 4 hour travels were first scheduled to initiate in 2019 however were delayed due to Covid catastrophe. LNER London North Eastern Railway plans to rapid trains on the East Coast Mine Line by December will get the green signal from UK Government.
If approved one of the couple trains an hour between Edinburgh and London would take 4 hours 8 minutes southbound and 4 hour 5 minutes north bound. LNER cheap price competitor the LUMO complete the distance in a similar time while Avanti West Coast also offers trains from London Eustion through Birmingham which take 5 hour and 40 minutes however are much cheaper than LNER in advance.
The railways are in rival with cheapest flights which takes more than the one hour time spent getting through the airports at both ends which can take 9 hours on a normal speed with three half hour stops.
One of the severe challenge for LNER is the low price airlines fare with easyjet and Ryanair fares almost one quarter of the price for journey in 4 week time.
Cheapest LNER advance single from King Cross Edinburgh was 63 euro taking 4 hour and twenty minutes. Ryanair and easyjet offering 15 and 17 euro respectively on the same date. It take almost 75 minutes flight.
