A battery part innovation could help keep power delivery high when electric aircraft land with less charge.

The research provides a solution to problem identified in 2018 in a study head by Venkat Vishwanathan a professor of aerospace engineering at U-M and coauthor of new work published in Joule.

The team stressed that this different from needs of EV batteris which mainly need to maintain ranges.

Both takeoff and landing require high power and landing is more challenging because you are not fully charged. To get high power you have to bring all resistances down.

For aircraft its the power fade that is critical the ability to consistently achieve high power to takeoff and landing.

Capacity fade and power fade occur when lithium ions can no longer move easily an out of electrodes. The key for capacity fade is quantity of lithium ions that can move between electrodes the main factor for power fade is speed.

The problem is that corrosion builds up on electrodes taking up space that have housed lithium ions and making it harder for lithium to reach available spaces.
